In this sequel to The Not So Big House, Sarah Susanka shows readers how to create extraordinary "Not So Big" homes. She leads a personal tour through 25 of the most beautiful, well-designed homes in North America. More than 200 color photos, floor plans and design details illustrate this innovative philosophy.
Sarah Susanka has a not-so-insignificant idea in Creating the Not So Big House. She contrasts the glamorous, glossy-photo house plans of vaulted ceilings and palatial living rooms with the livable, day-to-day pleasure of cozy window seats and comfortable breakfast nooks, and her conclusion is resonating with families across the country: bigger but shoddier isn't better than smaller and well made. Descriptors like "spacious" and "expansive" fill the real-estate promos, but Susanka seeks the elusive yet affordable qualities that turn a house into a home. And she provides more than mere ideals around which to rally. She selected 25 house designs, from a southwestern adobe to a Minnesota farmhouse to a New York apartment to a Rhode Island summer cottage, and she profiles each home in great and well-illustrated detail.

Her ideas for interior as well as exterior views, airy stairways, diagonal views, and framed openings translate well in an array of different houses appropriate to childless couples and large families, as well as hot climes in Texas and cooler regions in Vermont. There are traditional designs to fit in with Massachusetts styling and contemporary designs to adapt to California cliffs, and they range from country spaces to suburban homes to city apartments.

Susanka selected house plans that are available for sale, because her purpose is to make affordable quality housing accessible to the general public, but they're also presented as catalysts for your own designs, because the house that worked for one person might inspire the plan that would work best for you. Whether you're in the market for a new house, want pragmatic renovation ideas, or are interested in the concept of space-saving abodes from a city-planning, philosophical perspective, Susanka's book is an eye-opener and a mind-expander, providing conceptual and practical tools to assist you in planning your own livable home. --Stephanie Gold

Studio Apartments: Big Ideas for Small Spaces Reviews

Studio Apartments (Big ideas for small spaces)

In this book, James Trulove takes on the challenge of interior design for small apartments. With photos and case studies including floor plans of more than twenty studios under 800 square feet each, readers are shown solutions to the typical problems architects are asked to solve: creating sleeping alcoves, efficient kitchens, appealing bath and dressing areas, adequate storage, and work and entertainment areas.

Actual projects show how architects and interior designers extract maximum style and usage from small, urban apartments: a master bedroom is carved from seemingly nonexistent space and then hidden behind a frosted glass wall; a closet becomes a cook's kitchen, and a single long room with windows at one end is transformed into a warm and inviting living room. The "big idea" that makes each apartment special is highlighted in designs ranging from traditional to casual modern to cutting edge.

Immaculate your Home
Nothing comes before this point. Have a look at your home. Now check, do you have paper bits or dust on your floor? Does your living room needs dusting? When was the last time you clean your kitchen appliances? By keeping this in mind and doing the simple task of cleaning will solve the initial purpose and surprisingly it does not cost any money. This will result into the large space and should be taken as the most important interior decorating tip.

Keep the Display Surfaces Clear
If you have a bookcase, center tables, side tables or mantels then keep the minimum accessories on the surface. This will enhance the style and openness. For the mantle it is better to go for the artwork rather than mirror as mirror is quiet an outdated option. Center table or side table can also have one or two accessories but not more than that.

Home Furnishings and Accessories
When we think of home decoration then textile & home furnishings plays an important role. All the furnishing items and accessories must speak for themselves and stick to the theme of a particular room. Say for an example if your a going for drawing and dining furnishings then right from the sofa covers, cushions to table mats and floor carpets, all should create a harmony. Bathroom furnishing materials must be according to the color of walls and bath accessories selected. Now to keep  everything in budget, make the thumb rule of buying one precious home furnishing accessory with inexpensive ones. By making such pairs the overall lost cost look can be eliminated. Buy simple and clean lines as these give appearance of costly home accessories.

Paint your Dream Home
Experiment with  color, as this is the one thing that dramatically change the whole appearance and add value to your money. Selecting an extraordinary color will automatically maneuver your home  & will give your home an exceptional look of style and modernity. Check for different hues and color combinations. It is the time to go for more  bright  and complex colors rather than just white. You can also select different patterns that are in vogue. Patterns change the whole look of the wall and removes the dullness of single color.

The Perfect Flooring
Home flooring is another very important aspect of home furnishings. These days wall to wall carpeting is not in vogue but instead of this there are many other inexpensive and cost effective options available. You can go for laminate flooring that is easy to keep and quiet cheap. Then there are also other options like parquet flooring, hardwood flooring,  bamboo flooring and cork flooring. Now depending upon your budget you can pick the flooring type and style.

Hope these basic home decorating ideas and tips are useful for your interior home decor.

Interior Design Tips ? How to Decorative Ideas on Budget

Interior Decor Ideas

Budget isn’t always all about negative or limitation in decoration, but it’s more about being smart and creative. Having small budget doesn’t determine you cannot own an elegant feature home. Getting your spontaneous creative ideas flowing is the most important for making the most decorative budget, yet, remains essential needs. Below are some examples significant decorative ideas worth notice.

Recycling: Sometimes having a very tiny bit of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) might not always be a terrible thing if those stuffs are literally useable. Many people get a smart idea from their old stuffs like old wood or extra lumber that is lying around. These can be refurbishing, repainting, remodeling or retrofitting using basically technical tools and eventually turn them into wonderful eye catching decoration or furniture.

Retrofitting unused spaced: Another smart idea is exercising and remodeling unused space or you will lose it for nothing. Many people do not realize how much we can play with the space especially the spaces that seem to be unusable. Unused spaces like cavity under the stairs can be remodel to be an under-the-stair book nook or a kid’s hideout. This is not only expanding your pleasuring space but also adding more value in it. Basement is commonly used for storage old items and often dark and unorganized, remodeling it by adding any theme of decoration around your pleasure will transform unpleasant storage into a delightful room.

Using compatible materials and tactics: This is an effective economical idea in using one in compatible to another, yet, covers basically functions. Material like granite has been extensively used as dimension stone, countertop or flooring tiles because of its durability and aesthetic qualities but you also need to pay the price. The option is trying compatible cost-effective material like concrete which is verified and qualified in having equal harmonious. Concrete can also stimulate builders’ aesthetic creation since they can play more on the material and create their own crafts. Using decorative tactics are always challenging in real estate market, whoever has better tactics and ideas will win in this industry. However, for nonprofessional home owners or buyers, you can simply find some effective ideas on many construction sites to add more value in your house.

Bring back your scraps: Many of us might collect lots of fruitless scraps and leave them cluttered somewhere without glancing back at them again. Being creative is always smart, instead of wasting money buying an expensive decoration; you can create your own masterpiece on your budget. Nothing sometimes can turn to be something; broken tiles or glasses could turn to be a beautiful mosaic or nice picture frame, old CDs from 70s can be a great decorative on your wall for example. These scraps might sound more like trash than treasure but once you put the most important ingredient of creative in it, you’ll be surprise with the transformation.

Be well-design: Sometimes large space doesn’t mean a fortune if you don’t know how to use it. Having an unorganized large room can look cramp anyway.  Playing with off-the shelf products can increase more function and lot of space. Furniture with storage spaces is very beneficial, not only for utility but aesthetical appearances.

Anyway, one of the most important key is pulling out your creativity, be organized and lets it freshen up your home. Splendor for less is accessible when you follow these guidelines and you will feel even surprise with the result when you put your house on sell.

How to Decorate your Home – Basic Interior Design Ideas

Interior Decor Ideas

For many homeowners, learning how to decorate can be a challenging endeavor. There are so many factors to consider; where to start, how much to spend, how to layout awkward spaces, what type of furniture to buy. We hope that this article will bring some insight to home decoration and give you some interior design basics to help with decorating your home without too many hassles.

The first step in learning how to decorate is to determine your goals, style, and budget. Ask yourself a few questions about your interior design project. Following is a list of questions that should help you self-explore, and determine where to begin with your project.

1. What is the room or area you are decorating?
2. What is the style you would like this room to have?
3. What is the color scheme you would like to use?
4. What pieces of furniture & accessories will you need for this room, and what do you already have (and how much money are you willing to spend)?
5. How will you layout the space?

These questions are a great starting point to get you thinking about how to approach your interior decorating project. Determining the room you are going to be working on will help you to focus on one particular area, rather than becoming overwhelmed by a whole house, or multiple room projects. Do keep in mind, however that your color scheme and style should flow with other areas of the house.

Determining your style and color scheme are key elements in any room. These will help you set a direction and keep you on track in making choices. You can get interior design ideas from magazines, internet sources, online furniture stores, and from other people’s homes. Make mental notes about what you specifically like and dislike. As you look in furniture stores and online, be sure to make mental notes about the prices of the things you like. This will help you to determine a budget for your project.

You will almost always need to measure the room you are working on so that you know exactly what sized of furniture will fit in the room. If you are creative enough, learn how to draw out a floor plan to show you how to arrange furniture. It can be very expensive and time-consuming to purchase furniture that doesn’t fit in your room, or is ridiculously over, or under scale.

When learning how to decorate, be open to learning and getting interior design ideas from magazines, books and internet sources. Always keep your eyes open for things that you like, and constantly make mental notes about what you like and why. One of the most important interior design basics when starting a project, is to be sure to plan things out. Make the mistakes on paper, and in your mind, before you make the mistakes on your room. This will save you lots of time and effort!

Yuletide Decoration Ideas

Interior Decor Ideas

Decorating our house has been a necessity for home improvement enthusiast like me. It is like my greatest goal to create a unique interior design that would attract attention to guests whenever there is an occasion being celebrated at home. There are somewhat loads of decorating ideas in my mind that are not yet taken into consideration. But I see to it that it will be on my future articles when the ideas are successfully placed into action.

For now, I want to share some decorating ideas during Christmas. As we all know, we only have few weeks left to make some yuletide preparation. When we check online there are so many Christmas decoration ideas that really have a big impact to the masses. But on my end, I can only give some simple yet very practical ways of involving ourselves to the annual holiday celebration.

Take for example Christmas wreaths. Wreath is a ring like designed plant for decoration. This is a perfect interior decoration idea for our home during Christmas. We can pair this unique interior creation with red ribbons, poinsettias, mistletoes and candles. It would be also possible to make dried wreaths. We just have to find some weathered withered plants. It would also be perfect to choose what kind of plants we are going to use for our wreaths.

Another one is the candle holder. It is not as simple as the holiday wreaths but somehow it gives great interior accent to our dining tables, center tables and counters. We can have it painted with gold or silver to give a holiday feel. We can also pair it with ribbons and red candles for more accents.

Another unique holiday decoration is the illuminated planter. We can have different colors of luminous light for our planters. But for Christmas we can have green, red and yellow together to create a wonderful yuletide experience.

With the three holiday interior decoration ideas, we do have lesser expenses but the same holiday experience. Happy Christmas and a phosphorus New Year!

Through beautiful photography and illustrative text, installations for every room in the house-kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, and more-are presented. The Outdoor Living Room: Stylish Ideas for Porches, Patios, and Pools

The Outdoor Living Room: Stylish Ideas for Porches, Patios, and Pools

In the summer months and year-round in warmer climates, Americans love spending time outdoors. More and more, people are treating the outdoor spaces on their properties as true extensions of their homes, turning porches, pools, patios, decks, and gardens into outdoor living spaces that serve the same functions as indoor rooms. In The Outdoor Living Room: Stylish Ideas for Porches, Patios, and Pools, acclaimed author Martha Baker offers more than forty-five striking examples of this enlightened approach to outdoor decorating.

The Outdoor Living Room is divided into six chapters, each representing a specific type of outdoor style: Classic, Rustic, Romantic, Modern, Whimsical, and In Town. Six or seven different locations are featured in every chapter, each contributing a different idea or novel aspect of the same style. A multipaged “Components” section appears at the end of each chapter focusing on important elements of outdoor decorating, such as paving and lighting, followed by a heavily illustrated “Ideas” spread with tips on achieving a particular look. None of the magnificent spaces in this book has ever been published before; they range from a Southeast Asian–inspired tropical garden in Florida to a Japanese tea garden atop a New York City roof, from a grand wraparound porch on a classic home facing Lake Michigan to a thoroughly modern all-white patio near Miami. The Outdoor Living Room also includes an extensive resource section, illustrating and describing garden furniture, architectural and landscape elements, and decorative items. Packed with more than 350 full-color photographs, The Outdoor Living Room is at once a practical sourcebook and an inspirational delight. There are countless books about lifestyles that are inaccessible, either because they are engulfed by abstract ideas or are set in palaces, real or imagined. The Outdoor Living Room: Stylish Ideas for Porches, Patios, and Pools is a rare exception: gorgeous photographs of beautiful outdoor spaces that are accessible, or at least seem to be. Split up into sections that can appeal to anyone-"Modern," "Classic," "In Town," "Romantic," or "Whimsical"--this book can move even the most hardened city dweller, or bring dreamers out of their country homes. The book has a distinct magazine-like flavor, but the rigor of the photographic summation of elements in each section offsets this. The text is uninspiring, usually describing the photographs or making vague generalizations, but no matter, because the photographs are what this book is all about. They are beautiful and plentiful, whetting the appetite for sunny days in our own "outdoor living rooms." --Juliette Cezzar
